A self-taught artist, Onnissia's work explores the intersection of Black feminist issues and her rich Afro-Caribbean heritage.
Onnissia's art boldly embodies themes of resistance, joy, and liberation, driven by a mission to reclaim narratives and dismantle oppressive systems. It's about autonomy, offering the unbridled freedom to celebrate and express unique identities while unapologetically embracing heritage and culture. As a self-taught artist, Onnissia's creative essence draws from the rich tapestry of Black women's literature, Afrofuturism, and the rhythms of Black music. She is inspired by Black feminist issues and her Afro-Caribbean heritage. Originating from Los Angeles, CA, and Palm Springs, CA, her upbringing serves as a force in her creative journey. With a BA in Communication from the University of Arkansas, she is resolutely committed to crafting a visual legacy about the unyielding resilience of Black women. Using acrylic, multimedia, patterns, and oil pastels, she captures the very essence of Black womanhood. Her visual language is marked by clean lines and patterns that not only command attention but also ignite meaningful conversations. Onnissia's art is an homage to the unparalleled power and beauty of Black womanhood, an affirmation of strength and resilience.
